[Annotated] Coca-Cola mulls cannabis drinks

A hundred years ago, Coca Cola contained cocaine and was held up as a cure for^[각주:2] impotence^[각주:3], headaches and morphine addiction. The hard narcotics are^[각주:4] long gone^[각주:5], but folk are^[각주:6] aflutter at the possibility that^[각주:7] the fizzy drink^[각주:8] might one day contain cannabis^[각주:9]. For it emerged this week that Coca-Cola, the company, is taking a close look at^[각주:10] the cannabis-drinks sector. 

Weed-lovers^[각주:11] will be disappointed. The ingredient being considered by Coca-Cola is, for now^[각주:12], a non-psychoactive one^[각주:13]. Known as cannabidiol (CBD)^[각주:14], this extracts is^[각주:15] already quite widely used as a food supplement^[각주:16]. Users say it helps with anxiety^[각주:17], chronic pain^[각주:18] and mood disorders^[각주:19]. Smaller firms have already added it to soft drinks^[각주:20] and bottled waters^[각주:21]. 

But thanks to the trend towards^[각주:22] legalization of^[각주:23] cannabis across North America there is also growing interest in using the psychoactive part of the plant, known as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)^[각주:24], in products. Most of the attention paid to THC is coming from the alcoholic-drinks industry^[각주:25]. Constellation Brands, the maker of Corona beer, based in Victor, New York, recently invested almost $4bn in a Canadian cannabis firm, Canopy Growth. Diageo, a British drinks giant, is also rumoured to be exploring investment opportunities^[각주:26]. 

Large firms are moving cautiously^[각주:27] nonetheless^[각주:28] - particularly as cannabis is not fully legalized yet across America^[각주:29] - leaving smaller firms to make most of the running^[각주:30]. Ceria Berverages, based in Arvada, Dencer, will launch a line of non-alcoholic cannabis craft beers with THC later this year^[각주:31]. The Rebel Coast Winery in Redondo Beach, California sells a sauvignon blanc^[각주:32], also with THC instead of alcohol. It has only 35 calories a glass and promises not to give you a hangover^[각주:33]. 

Jessica Lukas, an analyst with BDS Analytics, based in Boulder, Colorado, expects cannabis to be used widely in other products once the drinks industry has led the way^[각주:34]. She notes that there are more than 100 different compounds in^[각주:35] cannabis, with various properties that could be useful. A few startups are already experimenting. Various formulations of cannabis can be found in creams, sprays, vape fluid^[각주:36], luxury chocolates, candyfloss^[각주:37] and even a "sensual^[각주:38] lubricant^[각주:39]" which, the makers claim, will enhance sex. Cannabis tourism and events are taking off^[각주:40], too, with weekend retreats^[각주:41], art gatherings, and even "puff" pastry cooking classes. 

Innovators are also trying to find new ways to appeal to consumers who^[각주:42] balk at the idea of^[각주:43] inhaling or eating cannabis. When it is consumed^[각주:44], it both takes a long time for its effects to be noticed and imparts^[각주:45] an earthy flavour that^[각주:46] some find unpleasant^[각주:47]. With some clever chemistry^[각주:49], firms such as ebbu, Sôrse and Mirth Provisions have developed formulations^[각주:50] that can be added to food and drink and deliver fast-acting cannabis with^[각주:51] no flavour. Firms large and small are^[각주:52] eyeing the opportunities^[각주:53] as hungrily as any late-night^[각주:54] pot smoker^[각주:55].
